“So…is this food?”
It has come to my attention that some people actually read my Facebook food posts, and some are even curious about Meet Fresh since I have visited the place ~15 times since it opened less than a month ago.
Let me be clear: if you’re not a Taiwanese fob, you probably won’t like Meet Fresh.
For the uninitiated, Meet Fresh is a Taiwanese dessert chain (which ironically, is going out of business in Taiwan) that specializes in grass jelly / taro / pudding type desserts. I love grass jelly (if you don’t know what it is, you probably won’t like it), so I always get the Meet Fresh signature (available ice or hot, $6.80).
I took my super white friend there, and he literally couldn’t find a single thing on the menu that looked appealing (but then he likes bagels, so go figure).
Him: <motions to the menu> So…is this food?
Me: Yes, it’s dessert.
Him: <pause> No, that can’t be right. <points to grass jelly> Is that chocolate?
Me: Um no.
It was hilarious seeing his response to the “food” options there, but it would have been funnier to see him actually try the grass jelly. I did make him try one of the Q-mochis I ordered, and he seemed to tolerate it.
Although I pride myself on introducing people to delicious food they’ve never had before, I recognize that some things aren’t universally delicious (grass jelly being one of them). However, I will take credit for introducing said super white friend to bibimbap, Gochi, and many other delicious things.
Apparently there’s “nothing on the menu for white people.”
I recall Nahm in Bangkok (your rec.) a great value. Delicious and memorable, but not life changing. But I doubt…
